CHERRY HILL, NJ – One of our South Jersey churches has begun a new endeavor that caught my attention. The Church of the Good Shepherd, Cherry Hill, NJ is preparing to launch a new ministry called “AWANA.” AWANA is a para-church organization that aims to partner with churches in an attempt to minister and share the Gospel to children and teenagers. It stands for “Approved Workmen Are Never Ashamed” and its major goal is to set a foundation in for students so that they are never ashamed of God and His work. I remember attending AWANA ministry at a local church when I was a child and it certainly had a positive impact on my life. I am excited to see the work continuing! I reached out to The Church of the Good Shepherd to find out more about this new endeavor. They graciously shared their heart for this ministry with me.
Q: What led or inspired your church to begin an AWANA ministry?
A: What inspired us to start this ministry was seeing how much success our Vacation Bible School events were having, both in attendance, and in the number of lives changed by the Gospel. We decided that it was important to have a follow-up ministry for these students as so many changes within the year break between VBS’s. We are also a family-focused church and want to provide this service to the community to hopefully bring more families into our church family.
Q: How is the volunteer training going so far?
A: So far, our training is going great! This is all new to us, but the New Jersey AWANA missionaries have been able to explain to us how different materials are used and share some of the more effective techniques they have found in their experiences We have right around 25 volunteers helping with the ministry and are hoping that even more will join in!
Q: What are you hoping to see happen as a result of this ministry?
A: Our goal with this ministry is to share the Gospel with our community. We have found that the children’s ministry is great for reaching out to those who usually may not feel comfortable walking into a church on their own. We also want to provide a safe and secure place for children that might not live in the best home environments so that they know that they are loved by both our church and, more importantly, by our God.
Q: Could you provide contact information for those who may want to get involved with AWANA training or partner with your church in this endeavor?
If anyone wants to contact us for more information, they can feel free to send an email to any one of these addresses:

Let us commit to praying with The Church of the Good Shepherd as they embark in this new adventure in their church.
